Hurricane Preparation

Hurricane Preparation

As we watch Hurricane Irma, we need to get our Hurricane Preparation in place.  There are several steps in planning for a major storm, whether it’s a tropical storm or a hurricane.  Here are some things you’ll need to do and hopefully we won’t need to activate our plan!

Have your important papers such as your insurance policy, flood policy, bank account numbers, passports etc. in a water proof container.  Zip lock baggies work pretty well.  This is so you can just grab them in case you need to evacuate.  Make sure to have battery operated lights or lanterns.  Fully charge your cell phones.  Put your hurricane shutters up.  Take all loose objects from around your house and bring them inside.  Listen to your local emergency operations broadcasts.  Pay attention to your local news forecasts such asNBC Fort Myers, go to the Lee County Website

Make sure you have at least a 3 day supply of water.  Don’t forget that’s for each person and pets.  Pet food, non perishable food, paper towels, toilet paper, etc.  If you are told to evacuate, don’t hesitate, just do it.

We here in Cape Coral are watching the storm, listening to the weather forecasts and keeping updated.  As of today, this is a Category 5 with winds over 175mph.  Have your supplies in place, know your evacuation route.  Keep informed.
